The International Peace and Responsibility Centre (IPCRC) has confirmed that the Anambra State local government elections were free, fair, and credible. The elections, conducted by the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission, took place on Saturday.
Although voter turnout was low, the exercise was peaceful and orderly, according to IPCRC observers. Over 100 observers were deployed across the 21 local government areas, with additional citizen observers engaged for wider coverage.
The electoral commission ensured inclusivity, prioritizing vulnerable groups such as the physically challenged, nursing mothers, and lactating mothers. Party agents from APGA, PDP, and LP were present at various polling stations.
However, observers noted some logistical challenges, including inadequate voting cubicles and overcrowding at larger polling units. The electoral body has been advised to address these issues for future elections.
The IPCRC has called for governance reforms, integrity, and capacity building in local government council administration, as well as early voter education and citizen sensitization efforts to improve voter turnout.
