Abia Community Installs US-Based Computer Programmer as Traditional Ruler
Over the weekend, Umuawa Alaocha II Autonomous Community in Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State marked a historic event as Eze Anthony Ohaeri, a US-based computer programmer who is also hearing-impaired, was installed as its traditional ruler.
The Abia State government expressed excitement over this unique coronation, emphasizing its commitment to inclusivity and the well-being of citizens.
Mr. David Anyaele, the Special Assistant to the governor of Abia State on Persons With Disabilities, highlighted the government’s determination to eliminate barriers faced by individuals with disabilities, ensuring they feel a sense of belonging in society.
He mentioned various programs and policies aimed at improving the welfare of citizens.Commending the government’s support for the emergence of a hearing-impaired traditional ruler, Eze Innocent Nwaigwe, Chairman of Umuahia North Traditional Rulers Council, praised the present administration’s commitment to inclusivity.
He noted that this act broke barriers for persons with disabilities, showcasing the government’s dedication to protecting the interests of all citizens.
Mr. Wisdom Okechukwu, Chairman of the Joint National Association of Persons With Disabilities, described the event as historic and unprecedented, emphasizing its significance in reinforcing the confidence of persons living with disabilities in the state.
In his address, Eze Anthony Ohaeri expressed gratitude to the community and the Abia State government for enabling him to become a traditional ruler despite his hearing impairment.
He pledged an inclusive leadership style and collaboration with individuals and the government for the community’s sustained socio-economic growth.
Eze Ohaeri emphasized his commitment to creating platforms that encourage community members to explore their potentials, reduce crime rates, and increase productivity.
However, he called attention to the infrastructural challenges faced by the community, particularly the deteriorating condition of Umuawa Alaocha Road, urging the state government to address these issues.
The traditional ruler appealed for improved infrastructure in areas such as education, health, water supply, skills acquisition, and agriculture.
He expressed optimism that the government’s rebuilding agenda would boost rural economy and productivity in communities across the state.
The event featured the conferment of chieftaincy titles on deserving individuals, including those with disabilities, highlighting a broader recognition of diverse contributions within the community.
