Aiyedatiwa Sworn in as Ondo Governor, Nigerians Mourn Akeredolu
Ondo State, Nigeria –
Less than 24 hours after the passing of Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, the Deputy Governor and acting governor, Mr. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, was sworn in as the substantive governor of the state. The ceremony took place at the Cocoa Conference Hall of the Governor’s Office, where Chief Judge of Ondo State, Justice Olusegun Odusola, administered the oath of office around 5pm yesterday.
Governor Akeredolu, aged 67, succumbed to complications from prostate cancer and leukaemia in Germany. Aiyedatiwa took over after formally assuming the role on Wednesday, December 13, during Akeredolu’s medical vacation. Aiyedatiwa expressed sorrow in accepting the responsibility and highlighted Akeredolu’s legacy, including initiatives in security, health, education, and infrastructure.
Prominent figures, including President Bola Tinubu, governors, and leaders of the National Assembly, joined the nation in mourning not only Akeredolu but also Ghali Umar Na’Abba, the eighth Speaker of the House of Representatives, who also passed away on the same day at the age of 65.
In his address, Aiyedatiwa praised Akeredolu’s courage and dedication, citing significant accomplishments such as the ‘Amotekun Corps’ for regional security and landmark projects like the Ondo-Linyl Industrial Hub.
The family of Governor Akeredolu officially confirmed his passing, stating that he peacefully departed in his sleep at a German hospital where he was receiving treatment. They appreciated the support received and requested privacy during this difficult time.
The Ondo State Government, in an official statement, expressed deep sorrow and announced the passing of Governor Akeredolu. They acknowledged his extraordinary leadership and dedication to the state, describing him as an exemplar of integrity and a prominent advocate for the South-west region and the nation.
Akeredolu, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), former president of the Nigerian Bar Association, and former Attorney General of Ondo State, served two terms as governor. His health challenges were known since 2022, and he faced controversies and power struggles during his medical leaves.
The new governor, Aiyedatiwa, assured the people that the state would continue to advance their welfare and uphold the legacies of Governor Akeredolu. Funeral arrangements for the late governor will be announced in due course by the family and the state government.
