Anambra Monarchs Decry Alleged Disrespect by Soludo-Led Government
Traditional rulers in Anambra State have voiced their grievances against the Anambra State Government, led by Governor Chukwuma Soludo, accusing it of mistreatment and disrespect.
In a letter signed by Igwe Alfred Achebe, the Chairman of Anambra State Traditional Rulers Council (ASTRC), the traditional rulers expressed their dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of their members, deeming it disrespectful.
The state government, acting through the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, reportedly suspended a traditional ruler for bestowing a chieftaincy title on Senator Ifeanyi Ubah.
The government also issued threats to other traditional rulers, demanding a reversal of such recognitions.Notably, three traditional rulers have succumbed to pressure, publicly apologizing to Governor Soludo for conferring titles and retracting their recognitions.
Among those who apologized are Igwe Gerald Mbamalu of Ojoto, Igwe Damian Ezeani of Neni, and Igwe F.E. Ebelendu of Aguluezechukwu.Igwe Achebe condemned the actions of Mr. Tony-Collins Nwabunwanne, the commissioner in charge of the ministry, accusing him of disrespecting the traditional institution.
Achebe criticized the unilateral actions taken against traditional rulers and the use of social media for communication.Particularly, the suspension of Igwe Damian Ezeani of Neni, Anaocha Council, was labeled as dehumanizing and selective, as it was allegedly based on “non-compliance with the Code of Conduct.” The Anambra monarchs demand a reconsideration of their treatment, emphasizing the importance of preserving the dignity and traditions of the revered institution.Credit: The Guardian
