Army Arrests Soldier Criticizing Sanwo-Olu in Viral Video

The Chief of Army Staff, Major General Taoreed Lagbaja, has confirmed the arrest of a soldier who criticized Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, in a viral video. General Lagbaja emphasized that the soldier’s conduct, caught driving against traffic, does not reflect the values of the entire Nigerian Army.

Lagbaja revealed that many viral videos allegedly depicting soldiers criticizing Sanwo-Olu were deemed fake. He clarified that only one authentic video was investigated, leading to the arrest of the unidentified soldier involved. The Army Chief assured that steps have been taken to educate soldiers on appropriate behavior in the diverse localities where they are deployed.

Governor Sanwo-Olu had earlier, on January 2, ordered the arrest of a soldier and several commercial motorcyclists for traffic violations on the Lagos-Badagry expressway. This directive came as the governor returned from inaugurating a project at the Lagos State University (LASU), sponsored by Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila.

In response to the arrest, a soldier expressed his discontent in a widely circulated video on January 4. The unidentified soldier criticized Governor Sanwo-Olu for ordering the arrest of his colleague and three other motorcycle riders, accusing the governor of labeling a soldier as “useless” in the presence of “bastard civilians.”
