Army Court-Martials 17 Soldiers for Alleged Sale of Weapons and Other Offenses
At least 16 soldiers and one officer currently face court martial proceedings in Plateau State for a range of alleged offenses. These accusations include armed robbery, murder, unlawful possession of arms and ammunition, and the illicit sale of weapons, actions that stand in direct contradiction to their operational mandate within the 3rd Armored Division.
The inaugural session of the court martial convened at the 3rd Armored Division, Maxwell Khobe Cantonment, Nigerian Army, located in Bassa Local Government Area, on Tuesday.
Speaking after the inauguration, Major Aminu Mansur Mairuwa, the acting Deputy Director of Legal Services for the 3 Division Nigerian Army, emphasized the military’s commitment to discipline.
He underscored the importance of adhering to internal disciplinary mechanisms and legal procedures, ensuring compliance with the rule of law and principles of natural justice.Brigadier General Liafis Bello, the President of the General Court Martial, echoed this sentiment.
He highlighted the Nigerian Army’s core values of discipline, regimentation, and professionalism. Bello emphasized that the court martial process aligns with the military’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and maintaining a highly trained and motivated force.
The court martial was established as part of the Nigerian Army’s ongoing efforts to ensure discipline and accountability within its ranks. Major Nasir Abdullahi, the Judge Advocate, emphasized the importance of timely investigations and prosecutions of erring officers and soldiers.
He cautioned against unnecessary delays in dispensing justice, urging both the accused and their defense counsel to adhere to procedural timelines.Samson Gotom, representing the Plateau State chapter of the Nigerian Bar Association, emphasized the importance of a fair trial.
