The South-eastern region of the country has been forced to observe a sit-at-home today in honour of members who lost their lives during the crisis. This sit-at-home was imposed by the Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s faction of IPOB through a voice note circulated on the social media warning individuals of the southeastern region to stay in their homes today, 30th May, 2024.
According to the voice note, people are warned to stay at home from the 29th May till 31st May 2024, but people went about their businesses on the 29th May, and today 30th May the road became deserted.
The voice note stated that from Wednesday 29th to Friday, May 31st, 2024 is set aside for the observation of the Biafran Day and no one is allowed to leave their homes, concerned individuals adhered to this information circulated because the cities in the region are empty today 30th May.
In fact, the roads are empty as even travellers are afraid to leave their homes for fear of the consequences of disobeying the said order made by the Nnamdi kanu’s faction of IPOB.
However, as the roads are deserted with no cars on them, security agents of the country, the Police force and Nigerian Army are on patrol to make sure that there is no hassle as a result of this order. Security agents are ensuring that there is no cause for emergency in case the IPOB soldiers, referred to as ESN destroy properties or disturb the people of the region.
Our correspondent gathered that early in the morning, people were afraid to leave their homes for fear of the unknown, but as at the time when this news was being complied, many people have left their homes and vehicles have gradually started travelling the roads.
This action is condemned as totally unacceptable because calling into remembrance the memory of Biafrans that lost their lives during the crisis does not call for a sit-at-home or a total lockdown that the people were forced to observe.
In retrospect, people should be allowed to celebrate this day by honouring the dead in their hearts solemnly and not forced to observe it in a certain kind of way that is much uncalled for.
