Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, has revealed that Nigeria receives the largest share of intervention funds allocated by the foundation in Africa. He made this statement during an interview with journalists in Abuja, Nigeria.
Gates explained that the foundation spends billions of dollars in Nigeria due to the country’s large population and significant needs. He emphasized that reducing global health inequality and eradicating diseases like measles, malaria, and polio are top priorities for the foundation.
The foundation also focuses on improving primary healthcare, as it has the greatest impact per dollar spent. Additionally, Gates highlighted the importance of boosting agricultural productivity in Nigeria through access to high-yield seeds, fertilizers, and improved information for farmers.
The foundation supports food fortification and access to affordable foods to reduce malnutrition. Gates emphasized the need for innovative ideas and tools to substantially reduce malnutrition in Nigeria.
Since its inception, the foundation has supported partnerships with African regional institutions, national governments, and local communities in 49 African countries.
