Binance Executive Tigran Gambaryan Denied Bail Amid Health Concerns

Tigran Gambaryan, a Binance executive, has been denied bail by Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja, despite concerns over his health. Gambaryan’s lawyer, Mark Mordi, had argued that his client’s health was “perilous” and required surgery for a herniated disc and psychiatric care due to depression and anxiety. However, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s lawyer, Ekele Iheanacho, countered that Gambaryan’s condition was not severe enough to warrant bail.

Gambaryan, who appeared in court in a wheelchair, is facing $35.4 million in money laundering charges brought against him by the EFCC. The court adjourned the matter until October 18, 2024, and November 22 and 25, 2024, for the continuation of the trial.

The US has expressed interest in Gambaryan’s case, seeking access to the ailing executive. Gambaryan’s mother has also pleaded with the Nigerian government to release her son, offering to take his place.

In his ruling, Justice Nwite ordered the Nigerian Correctional Service to refer Gambaryan to a standard hospital in Abuja for treatment for three days to two weeks under security supervision.
