Magistrates in Cross River State have commenced an indefinite strike today, following the state government’s failure to address their demands related to welfare, promotions, and improved working conditions.
The decision was announced by the Magistrates Association of Nigeria, Cross River State Chapter, in a bulletin issued on Sunday. The bulletin, signed by the association’s chairman, Godwin Onah, and secretary, Solomon Abuo, stated that the strike would persist until all demands are fully met.
The strike comes after months of unsuccessful negotiations with the government. According to the bulletin, the association initially communicated their 8-point demands during a meeting held on November 5, 2024. A formal letter was later sent to the governor on November 11, with the strike notice extended until November 22 to allow for further dialogue.
Despite these efforts, the government reportedly failed to respond or initiate negotiations. As a result, the association directed all magistrates to withdraw from official duties, including court sittings, effective immediately.
The association has called for full compliance with the strike, emphasizing its determination to see their demands met before resuming work.
