Edo Assembly Moves to Serve Shaibu’s Impeachment Notice by Substitution
The Edo State House Assembly has taken a decisive step in the impeachment proceedings against the state Deputy Governor, Phillip Shaibu, directing that the notice be published in national dailies. This decision comes in response to the alleged refusal of the deputy governor to acknowledge the notice served on him by the House last week.
Accusations of perjury and leaking of government secrets were leveled against Shaibu as the lawmakers initiated impeachment proceedings against him last Wednesday. The impeachment notice marks the latest development in the ongoing rift between Shaibu and his principal, Governor Godwin Obaseki.
Tensions between the deputy governor and Governor Obaseki have been simmering since last year, stemming from Shaibu’s declaration of interest in the gubernatorial race scheduled for this year.
Upon the resumption of plenary on Monday, the House decided to serve the notice by substitution. Speaker Blessing Agbebaku alleged that Shaibu had rejected the impeachment notice previously served on him by the House. In response, the Speaker directed the Clerk of the House, Yahaya Omogbai, to publish the notice in the Nigerian Observer newspaper and other national dailies.
Speaker Agbebaku emphasized, “It is clear that the deputy governor has rejected the impeachment notice served on him by the House. The House will serve him by substitution by publishing the letter in three national dailies, The Observer inclusive.”
