Enugu Community Constructs N100 Million Lodge for Corps Members

The Ihe community in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State showcased its commitment to education by inaugurating N100 million facilities for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members on Thursday. The initiative aims to enhance the contributions of corps members towards elevating the standard of education in the region.

The newly unveiled facilities include a dedicated ‘Corpers’ Lodge situated within Community Secondary School, Ihe, as well as the refurbishment of the secondary school itself. The amenities also boast eight modern toilets, two boreholes with electrical and solar power supply, DSTV installation, solar lights complementing electricity, and a substantial generator.

This community-driven project, carried out in collaboration with the school’s Old Boys, underlines the collective effort towards community development. Prof. Martin Anikwe, the event’s chairman, emphasized that the lodge aligns with the sustainable education goals outlined by the United Nations.

Prof. Anikwe explained, “The construction of the lodge is part of our commitment to ensuring that corps members posted to the community embrace their assignments. Engaging corps members will serve as a catalyst in improving the standard of education in our community, fostering an environment where students, regardless of their economic background, can achieve their life goals.”

NYSC State Coordinator, Christiana Salmwang, expressed gratitude for the community’s generosity, highlighting the critical role comfortable accommodation plays in allowing corps members to settle down and excel in their primary assignments.

Emmanuel Nweke, Chairman of the Committee Project Development Fund of the secondary school, praised Dr. Madueke Ekoh, a community member, for contributing over 70% of the funds for the project. Nweke emphasized that the entire project, costing over N100 million, is part of several initiatives undertaken by the group within the school.

A corps member, John Issuma, shared his appreciation, describing the lodge as an “unexpected gift” that alleviates concerns about accommodation in the village. He expressed happiness, contrasting it with the challenges some of his colleagues face without proper housing.

In a final note, the community’s commitment to education through projects like the ‘Corpers’ Lodge reflects a broader initiative to create a conducive environment for learning and development.
