Enugu Doctors threatens Strike over abduction of 10 doctors

Enugu NMA is threatening to strike due to the abduction of 10 doctors. The state chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association warns of a work stoppage if the state government and security agencies don’t address the increasing kidnapping of health workers. Over the past two months, at least 10 health workers have been kidnapped, mainly from their workplaces.

In a communique from an Emergency General Meeting (EGM) held on Wednesday and signed by Dr. Celestine Ugwoke and Dr. Sunday Okafor, the Chairman and General Secretary of the state NMA, the union resolves to closely monitor the implementation of their resolutions. The NMA urges the state government to urgently secure public hospitals with armed personnel and strengthen the presence of armed security patrol teams across the state.

The communique emphasizes the need for the state government to promptly enhance the security architecture through adequate funding, installation of modern technologies, and other innovative measures. The NMA also demands that health institutions provide suitable facilities for Medical/Dental consultants on hospital calls or arrange ambulance escorts for them.

Furthermore, the EGM mandates the management of health institutions to establish security committees, adopt the UNTH template, and consider their unique circumstances in addressing security concerns.
