Enugu State Governor Unveils Ambitious Road Construction Project and New City Development

Enugu, Nigeria – October 17, 2023

In a monumental step towards infrastructure development and urban transformation, the Enugu State Governor has officially flagged off a multi-faceted construction project, aimed at revitalizing the state’s road network and creating a modern, world-class city.

The ambitious project encompasses several key components, including a 17-kilometer dual carriageway and feeder roads within New Enugu City, a 40-kilometer Owo-Ubahu-Amankanu-Neke-Ikem dual carriageway, and the construction and reconstruction of a remarkable 71 urban roads in the Enugu capital city. These urban roads are scheduled to be completed by the end of December, with the necessary funds already secured to prevent any delays.

One of the central themes of this project is an unwavering commitment to high construction standards and strict adherence to specified timelines. To ensure quality, the Governor’s office will closely monitor the construction process, and particular attention will be given to proper road paving and the absence of open drainages. Moreover, the installation of fully functional streetlights will enhance the safety and aesthetics of these roadways.

China Communication Construction Company (CCCC) has been entrusted with the responsibility of executing this grand vision. The project is expected to elevate Enugu to a level that can rival any great city globally, with the realization of a functional New Enugu City within the next 24 months. This city will not only boast state-of-the-art roads but also feature dedicated power generation, a central sewage system, and high-speed internet infrastructure—essential elements for a modern smart city.

The first phase of this extensive endeavor will encompass 26 square kilometers, which include the development of Happy Island, Vitality Bay, and the Innovation Park. Each of these areas will be designed to fulfill the purposes New Enugu City aspires to achieve.

Additionally, the 40-kilometer Owo-Ubahu-Amankanu-Neke-Ikem dual carriageway will serve as a major gateway to North Central Nigeria, facilitating access to rural areas and thus unlocking the potential of the local economy. The Governor’s administration plans to create special economic zones and construct access roads to farmlands, further enhancing rural development.

Governor Peter Mba declared a visionary goal to construct 10,000 kilometers of roads within the next eight years, a move that aims to attract investors and improve the quality of life for the people of Enugu. This comprehensive effort is geared towards reestablishing Enugu’s prominence within Nigeria and beyond, with a firm resolve to exceed expectations in the pursuit of this transformational endeavor.

With strong determination and unwavering resolve, the Governor and his administration are set to bring about a bright and prosperous future for Enugu State.
