The Federal Government has established a sub-committee to review the demands of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to prevent a potential strike. The decision was made during a closed-door meeting between the leadership of ASUU, the Minister of Education, and other officials.
The sub-committee will examine the union’s demands, which include improved infrastructure, academic freedom, and sustainable funding. ASUU is also seeking the release of revitalisation funds, renegotiation of the 2009 agreement, and payment of earned allowances.
Both parties agreed to reconvene on September 6, 2024, to discuss the progress made by the sub-committee. ASUU President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, expressed hope that the issues would be resolved amicably, prioritizing the interest of Nigerian students.
The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to finding a lasting solution to the union’s demands, ensuring that the university system is comprehensively overhauled.
