Flood displaces 300,000 people in Somalia
More than 300,000 people have been displaced by the worst flooding Somalia has seen in over 40 years. At least 29 people died following heavy rains that have inundated multiple regions across Africa, Somalia’s National Disaster Management Agency said on Thursday, Nov. 9.
Thousands were stranded by the floodwaters and forced to seek higher ground in areas like the town of Luuq, where the Jubba River overflowed its banks.
The combined effects of weather phenomena El Nino and the Indian Ocean Dipole were behind the deluge, bringing climate patterns that impacted ocean surface temperatures, causing above-average rainfall, Nazanine Moshiri, a climate analyst at the International Crisis Group.
