Mahathir Mohamad, Malaysia’s former prime minister, has been admitted to the hospital due to persistent coughing. His aide, Sufi Yusoff, confirmed that the 99-year-old statesman is expected to receive treatment for the next few days.
Mahathir was hospitalized on Monday, just a week after celebrating his 99th birthday. He has experienced heart problems in recent years and has undergone bypass surgeries. Earlier this year, he spent nearly three months in the hospital.
Mahathir served as Malaysia’s prime minister twice, first from 1981 to 2003 and again from 2018 to 2020, making him the country’s fourth and seventh prime minister. Despite his advanced age, he remains a significant figure in Malaysian politics.
