Olumide Akpata, the Labour Party’s governorship candidate for Edo State, has pledged to overhaul the state’s education system if elected. He made this promise during a visit to the Nigeria Union of Journalists’ Secretariat in Benin City, where he outlined his plans for the state.
Akpata lamented the deplorable condition of many schools in Edo State and vowed to restore the glory of Ambrose Alli University, which he described as a disaster. He emphasized the need to review the education curriculum to prioritize technology, warning that failure to do so would render students functionally illiterate.
The candidate also criticized the state government’s investment in a museum and a five-star hotel, calling them misplaced priorities. Instead, he promised to focus on people-centered governance and revamp the health sector by building healthcare centers in all 192 wards to provide quality healthcare.
Akpata’s plans aim to address the state’s internal revenue and debt profile, which he reported as N16 billion and N600 billion, respectively. He expressed confidence in his ability to rescue the state and provide a better future for its citizens.
