According to Punch newspaper, The German Initiative for Knowledge Transfer has renewed its appeal to the Nigerian government, calling for the release of Nnamdi Kanu to address the ongoing insecurity in the South-East region.
Hon. Obinna Ichita, the Country Director of the agency, urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene, emphasizing that Kanu’s continued detention has fueled unrest in the region. Ichita called for the adoption of alternative dispute resolution mechanisms to restore peace and security.
In a statement, he stated, “I appeal to President Bola Tinubu to kindly intervene and graciously approve and direct the activation of a process that will see to the release of Mazi Kanu and the restoration of peace and security in South-East through negotiation and alternative dispute resolution mechanisms.”
The agency had previously made similar appeals during the administration of Muhammadu Buhari, but no progress was made. Ichita suggested that Tinubu has an opportunity to succeed where his predecessor failed by resolving the issue through dialogue.
This renewed call reflects growing international and domestic pressure on the Nigerian government to seek peaceful resolutions to the challenges in the South-East.
