Today, March 6, 2024, marks the 67th anniversary of Ghana’s independence from its former colonial rulers, the British, as reported by the Ghana News Agency.
After enduring 83 years of British colonial rule, Ghana emerged as the first sub-Saharan African country to achieve freedom from Britain. The proclamation of independence by the country’s inaugural President,
Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, was hailed as a significant milestone in the nation’s history.Annually on March 6, celebrations ensue nationwide, extending to Ghanaians residing abroad. These celebrations encompass a variety of activities that span throughout the month.
This year’s national anniversary celebration is set to occur at the Youth Resource Centre in the Eastern Regional capital of Koforidua. President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s decision in 2017 to rotate the national independence celebration aims to spotlight different regions and stimulate local economies.
The Eastern Region is the third region to host the national anniversary, following the Central Region in 2022 and the Volta Region in 2023.
Under the theme “Our Democracy, Our Pride,” this year’s event will feature President Alassane Ouattara of Côte d’Ivoire as the Special Guest of Honour.
Approximately 120 ambassadors and high commissioners from various countries, alongside Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament and the 275 Members of Parliament, are anticipated to attend.
The celebration will showcase a parade involving security services, students, pupils, and diverse groups and institutions.
