The House of Representatives has passed two bills for second reading, aimed at reforming the police force and public service.
The first bill, the Police Act Amendment Bill, seeks to increase the retirement age of policemen from 60 to 65 years, or extend their service years from 35 to 40 years, whichever comes first.
The bill, sponsored by the Speaker of the House and the Chairman of the House Committee on Police Affairs, aims to retain experienced personnel, reduce training costs, and improve morale and job satisfaction.
The second bill, which seeks to amend the Code of Conduct Act, aims to delete the provision requiring public servants to declare the assets of their spouses. The bill, sponsored by a member from Lagos State, argues that this provision contravenes the Constitution and is unfair, as it could lead to prosecution if the information declared is found to be false.
The bills have been referred to the relevant committees for further legislative action.
