I am the only person to succeed Obaseki’s say’s his deputy, Shuaibu
Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, declared his interest in the 2024 governorship election under the Peoples Democratic Party in Benin on Monday. He emphasized that no one could hinder his ambition, highlighting his resilience in overcoming political challenges.
The formal declaration followed months of tension between Shaibu and Governor Godwin Obaseki. Despite Obaseki’s initial disapproval, Shaibu asserted his candidacy at the Bishop Kelly Pastoral Centre, urging support from the electorate and party members.
With 30 years in politics and seven years working with Obaseki, Shaibu believes he’s best positioned to succeed his principal. The venue for the declaration changed due to a scheduling conflict with one of Obaseki’s support groups.
Shaibu outlined his campaign pillars, including infrastructural development, economic diversification, education, sports, skills development, job creation, healthcare, social welfare, agriculture, rural development, poverty alleviation, and environmental sustainability.
Highlighting his achievements, Shaibu stressed the need for a more inclusive government, resonating with the aspirations of the Edo people. His ally, Immam Babangida, expressed confidence in Shaibu’s ability to bring credibility to the PDP.
PDP Secretary Hilary Otsu welcomed Shaibu’s declaration, emphasizing the party’s openness to all aspirants. He noted that Shaibu’s seriousness would be evident as the election process unfolds.
