The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that a total of 269,992 new voters were registered in Edo and Ondo states during the recent voter registration exercise.
According to INEC, 129,246 (47.87%) of the new registrants are male, while 140,756 (52.13%) are female. The majority of the registered voters (182,541 or 67.61%) are youths between 18-34 years old.
Students make up the largest occupation group, with 95,463 (35.36%) registrations, while 1,588 (0.59%) registrations were from Persons with Disability.
In addition to new registrations, INEC received 24,454 requests for replacement of PVCs, 74,493 applications for voter transfer, and 8,314 requests for information updates.
The preliminary voter register will be displayed for public scrutiny from June 12, 2024, for seven days, across all 395 wards in the two states. The register will also be accessible on the INEC website.
This display is an opportunity for citizens to review the register, identify any ineligible persons, and file objections.
INEC appeals to the public to participate actively in the process to ensure a clean and accurate voter register.
The commission will further clean up the register using the Automated Biometric Identification System before adding the new voters to the existing register for the two states. The final figures will be published on a state-by-state basis after the period for claims and objections.
The date for the commencement of the collection of new PVCs will be announced thereafter.
