Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has recorded significant achievements in his administration over the past three years. However, a growing wave of insecurity, marked by kidnappings, killings, armed robberies, and cult activities, has cast a shadow over his accomplishments and threatens his re-election bid.
Soludo’s tenure began in 2021 with a vision to reform governance and improve the state’s financial autonomy. His administration automated revenue collection, increasing monthly revenue from N1.5 billion to N3 billion, with a long-term goal of N10 billion. Despite securing approval for a N100 billion loan, the governor chose to rely on internal revenue without plunging the state further into debt.
Infrastructure development has been a cornerstone of Soludo’s administration. His efforts span health, education, agriculture, and transportation. Notable milestones include conducting local government elections for the first time since 2013 and achieving national recognition in primary healthcare, which earned the state $1.2 million in prize money. Salaries and pensions have also been paid consistently under his leadership.
Despite these strides, insecurity has undermined progress. Kidnappings, cult-related killings, and other violent crimes are rampant, leading to fears among residents and affecting the state’s economy. Several local government areas, including Ihiala, Orumba, and Ogbaru, are labeled “no-go” zones due to the escalating violence. Recent incidents include the kidnapping of a retired Anglican Archbishop and the killing of a university lecturer.
In response, Soludo has launched initiatives like “Operation Udo Ga Achi” (Let Peace Reign), deploying 168 patrol vehicles and leveraging ICT to combat crime. He also renewed his amnesty offer to criminals, urging them to surrender before February 2025. However, critics argue that deeper solutions are required to address the root causes of insecurity in the state.
As the 2025 gubernatorial election approaches, Soludo faces a significant challenge. While his reforms and achievements are commendable, the persistent insecurity could influence voter confidence. Security operatives, led by Commissioner of Police Nnaghe Itam, continue to work on restoring peace, but the situation remains precarious.
