The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) has recommended amending the Electoral Act to conduct all elections – presidential, National Assembly, governorship, and state House of Assembly – on a single day. This proposal aims to address the challenges of the current staggered election system, which is considered economically unsustainable and logistically challenging.
IPAC argues that the current system disrupts economic and academic activities, leads to prolonged shutdowns, and results in decreased voter turnout. A single-day election would reduce costs, minimize disruptions, maintain voter enthusiasm, and address logistical challenges.
Additionally, IPAC highlights the benefits of a single-day election, including simplified processes, reduced risks of logistical failures, and enhanced efficiency and integrity of the electoral process. This approach aligns with international best practices and would safeguard voters’ rights.
The proposal also addresses the shortcomings of the 2022 Electoral Act, including the lack of clear provisions for electronic transmission of results and inadequate safeguards against electoral manipulation. IPAC emphasizes the need for ongoing adjustments to electoral laws to prevent political actors from circumventing or manipulating the process.
