The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have announced an indefinite nationwide strike, starting June 3, 2024, over the Federal Government’s refusal to increase the minimum wage to N60,000 and reverse the recent electricity tariff hike.
The labour unions expressed grave concern and disappointment over the government’s failure to conclude the minimum wage negotiation and pass a new National Minimum Wage Act. They criticized the government’s lack of commitment and seriousness, noting that no governors or ministers were present at the recent meeting.
The strike aims to pressure the government to meet the labour unions’ demands, which include a fair and decent minimum wage, reversal of the electricity tariff hike, and an end to the categorization of consumers into bands.
The labour unions have called on their affiliates, civil society organizations, and the general public to join the strike, emphasizing that the welfare of Nigerian workers and people is non-negotiable.
