The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has reported 1,025 confirmed cases of Lassa fever and 174 deaths across 28 states and 128 local government areas nationwide.
The cases were recorded between January 1 and October 6, 2024. The affected states include Ondo, Edo, and Bauchi, which account for 68% of all confirmed cases.
Lassa fever is an acute viral hemorrhagic illness caused by the Lassa virus. Humans usually become infected through exposure to contaminated food or household items. The disease is endemic in parts of West Africa.
