The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has clarified that the ban on the sale and consumption of sachet alcoholic beverages in Nigeria is still in effect. This declaration was made by the agency’s Director General, Prof Moji Adeyeye, during a press briefing in Lagos.
Adeyeye stated that the ban, which was implemented on February 1, 2024, remains in force until further directive from the ministers. She acknowledged a meeting with the House of Representatives on the matter but emphasized that no conclusion had been reached to lift the ban.
The NAFDAC DG explained that the agency was acting on a ministerial directive and that any changes to the ban would require a memo from the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof Muhammad Pate, to the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the House Committee.
Adeyeye’s statement contradicts an earlier announcement by the House of Representatives that the ban had been suspended. The deputy spokesman for the House, Philip Agbese, had stated that the ban would be lifted temporarily until the economy recovers.
The ban on sachet alcoholic beverages was implemented due to concerns over the health risks associated with excessive alcohol consumption. Medical experts have warned that lifting the ban could lead to acute health complications, increased road traffic accidents, and other health problems.
The move to enforce the ban had generated protests from distillers and labor unions, who claimed it would result in job losses and economic losses. However, NAFDAC has maintained its stance, citing the need to protect public health.
