The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has issued a two-week ultimatum to the government to secure the release of Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, a member who was kidnapped seven months ago. The association is demanding unconditional release and threatening industrial action if their demand is not met.
Dr. Popoola was abducted on December 27, 2023, at the National Eye Centre in Kaduna, along with her husband and nephew. While her husband was released in March, Dr. Popoola and her nephew remain in captivity. The abductors have made several calls to the family, including one on July 24, to prove that the captives are still alive.
NARD expressed anguish over the situation and criticized the government’s inaction. The association’s NEC meeting in Katsina issued a communique signed by the President, Secretary-General, and Public and Social Secretary, detailing their demands.
The communique highlighted the alarming increase in insecurity, kidnapping, and assault on doctors, threatening their existence. NARD decried the nonchalant attitude of the Kaduna State government and the failing health of Dr. Popoola and her nephew while in captivity.
The association demands immediate implementation of the consequential adjustment of the minimum wage, expedited resolution of outstanding issues on MRTF, and payment of arrears. They appreciated the government’s quick payment of 2024 MRTF but noted that some centers and individuals are yet to receive payment.
NARD threatens industrial action if their demands are not met within two weeks, emphasizing the need for the government to prioritize the welfare and safety of doctors.
