NATIONWIDE STRIKE TO COMMENCE ON THE 14TH OF NOVEMBER

Nigeria Labour Congress to Commence it’s nationwide strike on November 14th, declares ‘total action’ against Imo State Government

Organized labor has announced a nationwide strike scheduled to begin on Tuesday, November 14, 2023. The union leaders have also declared a “total action” against the Imo State Government in protest of the assault on the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), starting from midnight on November 7.

During a joint emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the NLC and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) in Abuja, labor also decided to initiate a nationwide strike on Tuesday, November 14, 2023, if their earlier demands were not met by the federal and Imo state governments.

The President of TUC, Comrade Festus Osifo, declined to specify the nature of the action against the state, and Governor Hope Uzodinma but emphasized that it was a national action primarily targeting Imo state.

He expressed discontent with the events in Imo, stating that they shouldn’t have occurred. The protest by the President of the NLC was in response to issues such as unpaid salaries and the declaration of “ghost workers” in Imo state. Osifo emphasized that the protest was carried out without weapons, in accordance with legal and international guidelines.

A communique issued at the end of the joint NEC meeting outlined the decisions, including an immediate shutdown of Imo state, with workers and affiliates expected to comply. Flights, fuel supplies, and electricity into and out of Imo state will be halted. Public and private sector workers are to go on an indefinite strike. If their demands remain unmet, workers across the country will join the strike by midnight on Tuesday, November 14, 2023. State Councils of NLC and TUC are tasked with ensuring full compliance with these resolutions.
