The Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly, Abdulmalik Sarkindaji, who announced his decision to sponsor the wedding ceremonies of approximately 100 young women from his constituency in the Mariga Local Government Area has clarified reasons for his decision.
This gesture is aimed at supporting those who have reached marriageable age but lack the financial means to fund their weddings.
According to the Speaker’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Communications, Shamsudeen Binaira, the beneficiaries are either orphans or come from impoverished families.
The Speaker’s initiative seeks to alleviate the financial burden on these families, enabling the young women to marry their chosen suitors.
Binaira clarified that the young women are not being forced into marriage against their will. Rather, they have suitors of their choice, but their families lack the resources to fund the wedding expenses, including traditional requirements such as furniture and kitchen utensils.
The Speaker’s decision to sponsor the weddings follows extensive consultation and aims to relieve the financial burden on the families, allowing the young women to begin their married lives with dignity.
