Nigeria Celebrated 25 Years of Democracy

Nigeria marked Democracy Day on June 12, commemorating the 1993 presidential election won by Chief MKO Abiola. The day has been recognized as a watershed in the country’s history, symbolizing the struggle against military rule and the transition to democratic governance.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, congratulated Nigerians on the occasion, assuring that more dividends of democracy would come their way soon. He emphasized that Nigeria has made significant progress in the past 25 years, evolving into a democratic nation where the people have the power to decide who governs them.

Governors and civil society organizations also joined in the celebration, calling on Nigerians to continue participating in the electoral process to deepen democracy in the country. Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, emphasized the need for sustainability of democracy for development and progress, while Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, paid tribute to notable Nigerians who contributed to the enthronement of democracy.

Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, commended the sacrifices of patriotic heroes and martyrs who fought for democracy, while Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, charged voters to come out en masse to participate in the upcoming governorship election. Kogi State Governor, Usman Ododo, called on Nigerians to remain resolute in the collective journey to sustain democratic governance.

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, assured that democratic governance would continue to thrive in the state, while Senator Ede Dafinone called on Nigerians to embrace unity, love, and respect for one another and to deepen their engagement in participatory democracy.

The National Assembly caucus of Benue State and the Federal Appointees Forum praised President Bola Tinubu as a living hero of democracy and an exemplary leader committed to peace and progress in Nigeria.
