NLC Set to Commence Indefinite Strike
The Nigerian Labor Congress (NLC) is poised to initiate an indefinite strike scheduled to begin on October 3, 2023. This decision comes in the wake of an emergency meeting held on Tuesday, September 26, 2023. In a statement issued at the conclusion of the National Executive Council meeting with the Trade Union Congress (TUC), signed by NLC President Joe Ajero and Festus Osifo, the following resolutions were made:
In the spirit of Independence Day and to demonstrate their commitment to a truly independent Nigeria, the NLC and TUC have decided to take control of their destiny and address the nation’s issues.
An indefinite and comprehensive shutdown of the nation will commence at zero hours on Tuesday, October 3, 2023.
Workers across Nigeria are instructed to cease their services from their respective workplaces beginning on October 3.
Affiliates and state councils are urged to swiftly mobilize for action, organizing street protests and rallies until the government responds positively to their demands.
All patriotic Nigerians are encouraged to join hands across the nation to help refocus the government’s policies and programs on the people’s well-being.
The primary grievances of the NLC and TUC include the federal government’s removal of the fuel subsidy and its adverse impact on the impoverished populace. Additionally, they have accused the government of failing to engage in meaningful discussions with the NLC and TUC. Many Nigerians have publicly expressed their skepticism about the leadership of the NLC, alleging that the group may be pursuing its own interests. Meanwhile, the federal government is making last-minute efforts to avert the impending strike action.
