The Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, has criticized the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for allegedly aiding crimes in Nigeria. During a meeting with the new Benin Zonal Director of EFCC, Effa Okim, the monarch claimed that some EFCC operatives mishandled a fraud case involving former palace officials, leading to their release a few years ago.
The Oba expressed disappointment that EFCC investigators ignored clear evidence of fraud and alleged that they took instructions from “the highest bidder.” He mentioned writing a letter to the former EFCC chairman and sending an emissary to address the issue, but received negative reports.
Despite his concerns, the Oba welcomed the new EFCC chairman, Ola Olukayode, and encouraged him to continue demonstrating fidelity in his duties. He also pledged the palace’s support to the state government in addressing social inequality and reducing social vices.
In his address, Okim requested the monarch’s support in advocating against financial crimes, noting that Edo State ranks second in the financial crime index in Nigeria. He also sought prayers and royal blessings to enable him to discharge his duties diligently.
