The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) and the Nigeria Political Science Association (NPSA) have urged President Bola Tinubu to reshuffle his cabinet, bringing in fresh leadership to alleviate the economic burden on Nigerians. The opposition parties cited the failure of current ministers to effectively address the country’s challenges, including poverty and economic difficulties.
The National Secretary of CUPP, Peter Ameh, stated that the ministers’ incompetence reflects the failure of the Tinubu administration. He called for the replacement of ineffective ministers with capable Nigerians who can drive the country out of poverty. Ameh emphasized that a responsible government would have dismissed the ministers long ago.
The President of the NPSA, Prof. Hassan Saliu, also stressed that President Tinubu has the authority to hire and dismiss underperforming ministers. Saliu recommended bringing in new individuals with proven integrity and experience, as the current situation demands raising the standard for ministerial roles and expectations.
However, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) dismissed the opposition’s call, describing CUPP as a confused group. The Deputy National Organising Secretary of APC, Nze Chidi Duru, expressed surprise that the opposition was still talking about filling up spaces in the cabinet instead of focusing on reducing the cost of governance. Duru emphasized that the President is considering measurable tools to ensure appointed officials discharge their duties creditably for the benefit of Nigerians.
