Lawmakers from opposition parties in the House of Representatives are pressing the Federal Government to implement a new minimum wage of over N100,000 to address the demands of organized labor.
The Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress are seeking a minimum wage of N494,000, while the government has proposed N60,000.
The lawmakers argue that the current economic realities necessitate a living wage, with some suggesting figures ranging from N120,000 to N150,000.
They emphasize that failure to pay a living wage is a constitutional breach, neglecting the welfare of citizens.
The lawmakers also consider the private sector’s productivity and the need to review the minimum wage in line with the inflation rate over the past few years.
