The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has postponed its National Working Committee (NWC) meeting scheduled for Wednesday, September 5, 2024, due to the increasing tension between former Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, and the PDP Governors Forum. The meeting was expected to address the disagreements between Wike and the governors regarding the Rivers State party congresses.
The PDP governors have taken sides with Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, insisting that he should be recognized as the party’s leader in the state. This has infuriated Wike, who warned the governors to stay out of Rivers State matters or face consequences. The governors have described Wike’s threat as irresponsible and reiterated their support for Fubara.
The PDP NWC meeting was postponed to prevent a confrontation between Wike’s loyalists and the governors. The party’s acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, stated that no meeting was scheduled for Wednesday, while the Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Ibrahim Abdullahi, denied that the meeting was postponed solely due to the Wike-governors conflict.
Meanwhile, the PDP has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government of interfering in its internal conflicts and causing turmoil within other opposition parties. The PDP has urged the APC to focus on its own party and leave the PDP alone. In response, the APC has criticized the PDP for blaming others for its problems and offered to provide guidance on managing party affairs.
