Police yet to arrest the killer’s of Oyibo Chukwu – Family

Chief Oyibo Chukwu, the former Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) chairman in Enugu State, who was assassinated on February 22 while campaigning to become the Enugu East senator on the Labour Party (LP) ticket, will have funeral services on December 8 and 9.

Family sources informed SaharaReporters that the Nigerian police haven’t apprehended the killers yet. The burial will occur over two days in his hometown of Amuri in Nkanu West Local Government Area, Enugu State.

Chief Chukwu, once the national auditor of the defunct Social Democratic Party (SDP) and later the Enugu State secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was returning from a family meeting when he was gunned down in Amechi Awkunanaw in Enugu South LGA, just three days before the nationwide senatorial election.

His younger brother, Professor Arthur Chukwu, declared, “He was not just assassinated but also cremated by the barbarians, alongside his faithful personal assistant, in their Sienna vehicle.” The victims had no security because Chief Chukwu avoided bitter politics, thinking he wouldn’t be a target.

Chief Chukwu, highly popular in the Southeast geopolitical zone, was bound to win with a wide margin. The killings sparked national outrage, prompting then-President Muhamadu Buhari to condemn and direct immediate action by the police and security agencies.

LP member Honourable Paul Nnamchi expressed regret that the murderers remain unidentified. Due to the proximity of the assassinations to the senatorial election, INEC shifted the Enugu East senatorial election to March 11, aligning it with the governorship and House of Assembly elections.

The Labour Party selected Chief Chukwu’s younger brother, Kelvin Chukwu, as its flagbearer, and he won the election with 69,136 votes. Dr. Chimaraoke Nnamani of the PDP received 48,701 votes.
