Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga has refuted claims that the Federal Government purchased a new official jet for President Bola Tinubu. Onanuga explained that the government acquired a refurbished Airbus A330, which belongs to the country, not the president.
The refurbished jet replaces older aircraft purchased under former President Olusegun Obasanjo, which are in poor condition and incur high maintenance costs. Onanuga emphasized that the new jet will save Nigeria significant maintenance expenses.
He urged Nigerians to prioritize the president’s safety, noting that the refurbished plane will also benefit Tinubu’s successor. The National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, approved the purchase due to the exorbitant maintenance costs of the old aircraft.
The presidency’s defense of the acquisition contrasts with criticism from Nigerians and 2023 presidential candidates, who argue that the move shows insensitivity to the country’s economic challenges.
