President Bola Tinubu arrived in Maiduguri, Borno State, on Sunday night to commiserate with the State over the recent devastating flood. This is due to the overflow of the Alau Dam, submerging nearly half of Maiduguri and displacing thousands.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) reported that over 23,000 households have been impacted by the flood, with 70% of the city submerged in water.
The flood ravaged major locations, including the palace of the Shehu of Borno, Umar Ibn Garbai El-Kanemi; the state secretariat, post office, cemetery, and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.
Upon arrival, President Tinubu was received by Governor Babagana Zulum and other government officials at the Maiduguri International Airport. The President had earlier expressed deep concerns over the flooding, tasking relevant government agencies to expedite rescue efforts and calling for the immediate evacuation of residents in affected communities.
“The flood has caused unprecedented destruction, and it’s imperative that we take swift action to alleviate the suffering of the affected people,” President Tinubu said.
During his visit, President Tinubu will evaluate the impact of the flood on residential houses, hospitals, markets, schools, and other public facilities. The President’s visit demonstrates his commitment to supporting affected communities and ensuring prompt relief efforts.
The flood also had a devastating impact on the Sanda Kyarimi Park Zoo, washing away 80% of the animals. Reports indicate that the water has since receded, but the damage has been done, leaving many without homes or livelihoods.
