Reps Member wants Salary increase for primary school teachers
On October 19, 2023, Abubakar Fulata, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on University Education, called for increased salaries for teachers in Nigeria. He proposed that primary school teachers should earn N250,000 monthly, secondary school teachers N500,000, and university lecturers N1 million. He made this proposal during a workshop in Abuja focused on developing a roadmap for the Nigerian education sector from 2023 to 2027.
Fulata emphasized the importance of adequately compensating teachers to motivate them and improve education. He also highlighted the need to translate subject textbooks into local languages to align with global practices.
The Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, acknowledged the existence of good policies on paper but stressed the importance of timely and effective implementation. He indicated that President Bola Tinubu has charged the ministry with repositioning the education sector and addressing issues such as the employability of graduates.
Overall, this event called for better pay for teachers, a greater budget allocation to education, and improved implementation of education policies to enhance the quality of education in Nigeria.
