Security operatives have taken over the Eagle Square in Abuja, the venue for the planned #EndBadGovernance protest, amid disagreements between the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and protest organisers on the mode of conduct. The protest is scheduled to hold on Thursday in the Federal Capital Territory and other major cities.
Over 300 security operatives, 26 military vans, 12 police patrol vehicles, and a Black Maria were seen at the venue. The IG had recommended confined protests for public safety, but the organisers rejected this, insisting on their fundamental right to rally and embark on processions.
A Lagos State High Court has restricted protests to specific locations within the state, citing public safety and potential loss of lives and property. The court designated Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park in Ojota and Peace Park in Ketu as the only approved locations for protests.
The takeover of Eagle Square has sparked fear among civil servants and residents, with many vowing to stay away from work on Thursday. Security operatives were also seen patrolling major roads in Gwagwalada and other areas of the FCT.
Human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju has urged the Chief of Army Staff to withdraw soldiers deployed across the FCT and other cities, stating that providing security during protests is the job of the police.
The protest organisers have expressed determination to proceed with the demonstration, despite the heavy security presence and court restrictions. The Director of Mobilisation, Take It Back Movement, Damilare Adenola, stated that they would converge on Eagle Square on Thursday and request the use of the venue.
