The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on President Bola Tinubu to investigate the spending of ecological funds by Borno State, totaling billions of naira since 2001, including N816 million collected between January and June 2024.
SERAP wants suspected perpetrators of corruption and mismanagement to face prosecution and any proceeds of corruption recovered. They also urged Tinubu to direct the Attorney General to ensure access to justice and effective remedies for affected victims.
The organization expressed concern that ecological funds may have been diverted, mismanaged or left unaccounted for. Reports indicate that funds released for ecological projects were characterized by mismanagement, diversion of funds and substandard or abandoned projects.
SERAP emphasized the government’s obligation to promote transparency and accountability in ecological fund spending, citing the devastating floods in Borno that killed over 30 people and affected one million.
The group requested that the President take action within seven days, threatening legal action if necessary.
