Stop Buying Expensive Phones for your Wards – ProfessorProfessor Noah Yusuf, from the Department of Sociology at the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) and also the vice chancellor of Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin, advises parents and guardians to be cautious about the quality of materials, especially phones, they purchase for their children.
This precaution is to prevent them from becoming targets for criminals like kidnappers and robbers.
The advice was shared during a recent address in Ilorin by Professor Yusuf. He emphasized that the allure of expensive phones, among other materials, makes youths, especially those in higher institutions, susceptible to criminals.
These criminals might resort to robbing or kidnapping students to steal such valuable possessions. While acknowledging the importance of phones for students in aiding teaching and learning, Professor Yusuf suggested opting for less expensive ones that can serve the same functions. This, he believes, would protect students from criminally-minded individuals and groups.According to Professor Yusuf, spending exorbitant amounts, like N1 million, on phones for students is not advisable.
He pointed out that students can use phones of good quality but less expensive.Referencing a recent incident, Professor Yusuf shared that a female student was robbed twice by her boyfriend, who believed he could profit by taking her expensive phones. After the first robbery, the girl’s parents bought her a better and more expensive phone, only for the boyfriend to plan another theft.
To prevent such situations, Professor Yusuf encourages parents to make unscheduled visits to check on their children and observe their friends. This approach helps in detecting any attitudinal changes swiftly and allows for corrective action.
