Super eagles mourn four Nigerians that lost their lives during AFCON semifinal
The Super Eagles of Nigeria are in mourning following the tragic deaths of several fans during the semi-finals of the ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON).
During Wednesday’s match between the Super Eagles and Bafana Bafana of South Africa, at least five individuals lost their lives while fervently supporting their team.
In a heartfelt message shared via their official handle, the Super Eagles expressed their sorrow, stating, “During our semi-final match, we tragically lost a few supporters.”
“In a cruel twist of fate, their fervent passion for the beautiful game unwittingly led them to their final moments. As the Nigeria vs South Africa match unfolded, they were lost in the thrill of the game, unaware of the looming danger.”
The team offered prayers for the souls of the departed, hoping they “find eternal peace” and are remembered for their love of football and the unity it fosters. “Rest in peace,” they concluded.
Among the reported casualties was Dr. Cairo Ojougboh, a former member of the House of Representatives who represented the Ika Federal Constituency of Delta State. Additionally, Mikail Osundiji, a sales representative working with Nestle Plc, reportedly slumped and died while watching the match in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State.
Another victim was Chief Osondu Nwoye, a businessman from Anambra State residing in Abidjan, Cote D’Ivoire. The list tragically includes Alhaji Ayuba Abdullahi, the Deputy Bursar of Kwara State University, Malete, and Samuel, a Nigerian graduate and corps member.
These individuals all collapsed and passed away following a heavy shock after the referee nullified Nigeria’s second goal against South Africa, scored by striker Victor Osimhen, and awarded a penalty kick in favor of South Africa.
Despite the somber atmosphere, the footballing world presses on, with Nigeria and host nation Cote D’Ivoire set to meet in the final match of the Nations Cup on Sunday. Both teams secured their spots after winning their respective semi-final matches against South Africa and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
