Supreme Court imposes N40m fine on Mike Ozekhome
The Supreme Court imposed a N40M fine on Chief Mike Ozekhome, a human rights activist and Constitutional lawyer, for filing a frivolous motion regarding the Imo Governorship tussle decided in 2019.
In a ruling by Justice Tijani Abubakar, he ordered Ozekhome to personally pay the N40M fine to the four respondents involved.Justice Abubakar described the request as strange, frivolous, baseless, unwarranted, vexatious, and irritating, with the motion seen as an attempt to demonize the Supreme Court.
Mike Ozekhome, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), was fined for seeking to revalidate the suit that removed Emeka Ihedioha as Governor of Imo State in 2019.
The motion, considered frivolous by the court, asked for a consequential order to compel INEC to issue a fresh Certificate of Return to Mr. Ihedioha.
Ozekhome claimed that the APC had no candidate in the 2019 Imo Governorship election, arguing that Uzodinma unlawfully spent the four years meant for Ihedioha. However, the apex court dismissed the motion, stating it had no jurisdiction to entertain such a request.Credit : Daily sun
