Kaduna Electric has disconnected electricity supply to the Kaduna State Government House and other state government facilities due to unpaid bills totaling N2.9bn. Despite repeated attempts to resolve the issue, including consultations with state officials, Kaduna Electric issued a disconnection notice on July 21.
The debt comprises outstanding balances for electricity consumed from January 2024 to July 2024, amounting to N1.166 billion, and historical debt. Kaduna Electric emphasized that the disconnection was a last resort after all other avenues for resolving the payment issue had been exhausted.
In a related development, the Kaduna State Internal Revenue Service sealed the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company over a N600m tax liability. The tax liability was from 2015 to 2022, and despite agreements to pay, KAEDCO had not met its commitments.
Kaduna Electric’s decision to disconnect power was necessitated by the need to meet its financial obligations amidst challenges facing the electricity sector. The company emphasized that it is focusing on fulfilling its commitments to the electricity market and ensuring stability in its operations and sustainability.
