Tragedy Strikes Bodija, Ibadan: Explosion Claims Lives and Causes Injuries
In the wake of a devastating explosion that occurred at approximately 7:44 pm on January 16, 2024, in Bodija, Ibadan, the Oyo state governor visited the scene to assess the aftermath. Regrettably, this incident resulted in casualties and injuries among the residents in the vicinity, leaving a trail of destruction to properties.
Immediate response efforts were initiated, deploying first responders and relevant agencies within Oyo State to conduct extensive search and rescue operations. These operations are ongoing and will persist throughout the night, the governor said.
The site of the incident saw the deployment of earth-moving equipment, ambulances, emergency lights, and security personnel. Wounded and injured individuals are being promptly treated and transported to both public and private hospitals in Ibadan. Medical personnel stand ready at these facilities to provide necessary assistance to the injured. A visit to the University College Hospital (UCH) was made to witness firsthand the conditions of some of the victims.
As of now, the toll stands at 77 injured victims, with the majority already treated and discharged, alongside 2 reported fatalities. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the families of the deceased, and we pray for their souls to rest in peace, while also offering strength to their loved ones to bear this irreparable loss.
In a bid to alleviate the financial burden on the victims, I have directed that the government cover the medical bills for all affected individuals. Additionally, temporary accommodation will be provided for those whose houses were impacted, and comprehensive support will be extended to help them rebuild their lives.
Preliminary investigations conducted by security agencies indicate that illegal miners occupying one of the houses in Bodija stored explosive devices, leading to the tragic blast. Ongoing investigations aim to bring those responsible to justice.
A plea is extended to all residents to contact 615 for any emergencies they may be facing at this time. It is crucial to remain calm and stay away from the immediate scene of the incident, allowing rescue operations to proceed without interference.
Our gratitude is extended to the first responders, security personnel, and all individuals at the scene assisting with rescue operations. Special appreciation is also conveyed to the medical personnel diligently caring for the injured.
