UK LAUNCHED A NEW COIN CALLED SNOWMAN COIN

The Royal Mint has introduced a new collectible coin honouring The Snowman.

The artwork portrays the story of James, a small child who constructs a snowman that comes to life, as told in the beloved children’s book by Raymond Briggs. It is the first 50p Christmas coin from the Royal Mint to have King Charles’ official coinage picture on it.

More than 5.5 million copies of The Snowman have been sold worldwide since its 1978 release.

“Continuing our partnership with award-winning illustrator Robin Shaw, we are excited to release another original festive coin that brings Raymond Briggs’s story to life in a new way,” said Rebecca Morgan, director of collector services at the Royal Mint.

The Snowman coin for this year is especially noteworthy because it is the first Christmas currency to include King Charles III’s likeness on the obverse.

“We hope that people love the coin’s design and look to collect a piece of British Christmas history.”

Writer-illustrator Briggs passed away in August of last year, aged 88. An animated TV movie based on The Snowman won a Bafta TV prize in 1982. It was also nominated for an Oscar in the best animated short film category. Since its debut on Boxing Day 1982, it has been aired nearly every Christmas.
