The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) have issued a two-week ultimatum to the Federal Government to pay four months’ withheld salaries. Failure to meet this demand may result in a shutdown of universities and inter-university centres across the country.
In a letter addressed to the Minister of Education, Prof Tahir Mamman, the unions expressed their disappointment and frustration with the government’s neglect and insincerity. The letter, signed by NASU General Secretary Prince Peters Adeyemi and SSANU President Mohammed Ibrahim, emphasized that the unions could no longer guarantee industrial harmony in the universities.
As of Friday, the unions had not received a response from the government regarding their demand. SSANU’s National President, Mohammed Ibrahim, confirmed that no communication had been received from the Minister of Education, leaving the unions with no choice but to prepare for a potential strike. The looming industrial action threatens to disrupt academic activities in universities nationwide.
